  • Hi,

I finally managed to get all the required chips for the MKII. I got the board up and running a few days ago. Everything seems to work properly except for an odd issue with the Keyboard input. Starting with the letter "Q", and every other key after that, the key repeats itself when held down, in bursts, as in it will register several instances of the letter when the key is pressed, has a short pause then continues. This only happens on the QWERTY row of keys. I have tried different Keyboards and CIA chips but the issue persists. I noticed this is first when I was typing some basic commands and was seeing repeated key presses on the screen. This problem will definitely cause grief when Keyboard input is needed. Any ideas of what is happening?

  • Might be a simple contact problem - please try to move the CIA chip sideways in the socket when the lever is "down" (=closed). This will scratch the CIA pins against the contacts of the socket, removing oxide that may have built up over the years.

  • Jens, thanks for your response. I tried your suggestion but unfortunately the issue persists. As stated previously, I have tried other Keyboards and CIA chips from known working C64's and the results are the same.

  • Can you please take a picture of the bottom side of the CIA#1 and keyboard connector part?

  • Bottom of the PCB - please use the "macro" setting of your camera (often depicted with a flower).

  • Nothing problematic there - all solder spots look good. Last thing I'd try is to clean the pin header for the keyboard with an old toothbruch and pure alcohol. The trick for also cleaning the inside of the keyboard-side connector is to plug it on while the contacts are still wet. No need to wait until they're dry - the C64RMK2 will work even with a small amount of alcohol on the board.

  • Just to make sure: did you have any other peripherials (1541, Joystick?) connected? If so, please disconnect them for another test.

  • Thanks, I will give this a try. It will be about 3 weeks since I am traveling out of country. I will get back to you then with the results.

  • After trying these suggestions, the issue continues. I do not get the repeated Keys issue (as described earlier) using the keyboard on my other 2 Commodore 64's (the older Bread Bin model and the C64C). Using the keyboards from these computers on the MKII exhibits the same issue. I can definitely rule out the Keyboard. The VIA chips do not make any difference either, swapping the two or from the MKII with each other or known working spares I have, has no effect. I really like the product, everything else seems to work fine.

  • Looks like we need to take a look at it here - please ship it back including the chips you're using. Please declare it with a low value as "goods for repair", hoping that customs won't hold it (takes me about 2 hours round-trip to pick up goods from the customs office).
