  • wow. I just tested the 'save mountlist' feature now. Very nice. Just make the mountlist, then save a mountlist lst file. Then just run the lst file in the future. No need to manually mount each disk anymore!

    Nice work!

  • Hello ! Again the Chaco with new "r" release does not work against recent Linux Mint 22.2 - hmm how to solve this - last time I was on this forum I had too old Mint now I apparently have too new wxwidgets ! - I probably will solve it when I engage "matter between ears" but right now I struggle a little ....
    About this ?
    Cheers Dag !

  • These are build on a Gentoo install I've updated to the latest greatest last week.

Maybe you have luck running these (yes binary compat on linux is a pain).

libwx on my system are at version 3.2

  • Now the bigger question, will it work with my Commodore 64 Ultimate, Peter ? :) PS no, tried that with my V2, even though it would be useless I guess: screen corrupts / font corrupts. Menu can be used and items are selectable though. SR

  • I wouldn't have expected that an emulator can host the Chameleon. It'll have to be a real C64, or a C64 Reloaded (MK1 or MK2).

  • You would expect that, but after trying a bit more it does work for the most part when using VGA ! :)
Only the picture on the U64 (via HDMI) is garbled due to some VIC-II issue - related to VGA ? ; I was able to control everything via the U64 keyboard and through the VGA output. The drive IEC from the Commodore 64 Ultimate to the Chameleon works like a charm, albeit a bit slow - proof: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1076390#p1076390.

  • wow. I would never have dared doing this. I have two TC64 V2s and the U64 Elite II (not the commodore unit). Is there any technical reason this could ruin the hardware?

btw I also have the SPL-HD64 HDMI FPGA to give HDMI out from real C64. I did try TC64V2 with this and it also gave garbled screen from HDMI, like what you had with your Commodore Ultimate 64.

  • Is there any technical reason this could ruin the hardware?

The Chameleon is using a mode of the C64 PLA that was previously undocumented. And I'm almost sure that the C64 Ultimate does not implement it, so my guess is that there's bus contention in the VIC cycles. So yes, there is a chance of one or both of the devices being damaged.

  • So, my experiment would serve as a warning not to try this ? There not being a specific goal other than fun and the fact that the Chameleon is not yet obsolete, there is no other point. But, unsupported is different from "be careful it might break", right ? It was fun anyway, I will stick to my U64 from now on.

  • the fact that the Chameleon is not yet obsolete,

yeah. I find that the Chameleon still has quite a few benefits over something like U64/Commodore U64. With the latest firmwares the TC64 handles easyflash images better VS Gideon's devices. With Gideon's devices you have to enter the menu and save the easyflash image as a new file to save progress/highscore etc. Unless I missed something? With TC64, just by hitting menu button it asks you if you want to update the image. Just like how it works with D64s. Also, the Soul Force easyflash image does not work on the U64/U2 + with latest firmware at least. It just freezes. No issues on TC64. I also find the softer image output from my TC64 V2s to be a better fit for C64 VS the pixel perfect image coming from U64. And of course with the TC64 you can load something like Amiga core while still being able to use your C64 keyboard and joystick in cartridge mode. Also, I don't know if there is any option to use a USB mouse with U64/U2 +? With TC64 you can use a PS2 mouse that also works with other cores.

As I also already knew, TAP support is nice but really not something I use other than just loading a couple of games out of nostalgia. The missing D81 suppport on the TC64 doesn't really bother me either because Most/if not all D81 games has been converted to CRT images. And many of them as easyflash. So no issues saving. Same goes for disk emulation sounds. Doesn't really do it for me. Oh, and you can make diskswap files on the TC64 (LST files) where you can run this single file and all the disks from that game/demo will be mounted. And you can easily change between them with one of the buttons on the TC64. I know on the U2 + if you hold the middle button it will change to the next disk, but I don't think this is possible on the U64? Not that Gideon's devices are not awesome, because they are. But for me I think If I had to choose between any of these I would keep my TC64 V2s. Luckily I can own all of them.
