RE Graphics driver, is it 8 or 16 bit?

  • Hi

Looking at a lot of pictures on my new (old) Amiga A1200 with Indivision AGA Mk2cr I see a lot of dithering. On my WinUEA install I can replicate this by choosing a 8 bit graphics mode. So can I get around this issue by using a setting in the software? I am using the HD 720 screen mode as that suits my monitor best but it is the same in any gfx mode I choose.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

    Thanks in advance.

  • You don't choose "8-bit or 16-bit" on an Amiga screenmode, but you choose the colour depth by the number of bit planes. The WB is typically run with 2 bit planes (resulting in four different colours), and you can choose up to 256 colours with 8 bit planes. Only HAM and HAM8 screen modes can show more than 256 colours at a time, but HAM is not suitable for the workbench; it's only for pre-calculated still images.

Indivisino AGA MK2cr only buffers the screen, and doesn't even know about the colour depth. It just stores 24 bits per pixel in the buffer, which is the reason why it has so much more memory than the "naked Amiga" itself.

  • Even if I up the colours to 256 it is still dithered.

Probably just the way that this screenshot has been stored on HD. It's definitely not a problem of your flicker fixer.

  • The only way I could get WinUAE to look like that was to use an 8 bit screen mode. 16 bit looked smooth as the picture shows.

Using the HD720 screen mode in 256 colours on the actual Amiga still looked dithered to hell.

Anyway it is definitely not the way it is stored on the HD as it is the exact same picture.

    Thanks for your input guys.

  • It's the screen mode that is doing it. Used HD720 and the Highgfx screen modes in WinUAE and got the dithered version in both.

  • Yes the actual screen modes on WinUAE did the dithered look. Never mind, I'll just have to live with it or find another launcher for WhdLoad.

    Thanks again!
