  • Hi,

I bought recently a mk2. It works like a charm but there’s something is disturbing me. When I use it with a 8580(r5 if I remember well). The SID is not detected and I have the green led flashing but everything is working : I have sound. I have 2 8580 and both have the same problem. The only way I found to have the led stop flashing is to install a 6581 in the slot 1 and a 8580 in slot 2.

    Anyone have an idea?

  • Please go to the remote control menu and report the chipset values that were detected.

  • The value of 20h displayed for SID2 is considered "empty" socket by the firmware. So I can imagine why that gives a flashing led when put in socket position for SID 1. It is invisible to the board.

  • Maybe a contact problem? Try moving the chip sideways in the socket while it's closed (lever down). This will scratch off any oxidization layer that may have built up over the years on the pin(s).

  • OK, then PSU is not a problem. Where on the planet are you? Would shipping the board back for a check mean crossing a customs border?

And where does that 8580 SID come from? Did we sell it?

  • OK, so the SID may be at fault.

What kind of values do you get if you put the 6581 into the other socket? Are the values just swapped?

Yes, we sell 8580s to C64 Reloaded customers.

  • Please just swap the places and see if the measurement values also swap places. If they do, the board is OK and a new 8580 SID may solve your problem.

Did you ever use the audio-in feature of your old C64, for example to use the C64 as filter?

  • I tried to swap the SID and I don’t have the same values

    with 6581 in SID1 and 8580 in SID2, I have respectively (9C CA) and (21 20).

    When I swapped them, I have : (21 18) and (A0 CC)

Please, don’t tell me my board is broken...

And my C64 are second hands. I used them to play games or demos or to code.

I can’t say what previous owner had done with them.

  • The board looks OK - it's the SID that appears to have trouble. The 6581 gives proper values in both sockets, so the recognition circuit is OK on your board.

  • Make a member account and associate your guest-order with that new member account. For logged-in users, all previous sales will be taken into account, so you can order up to two 8580 SIDs with every C64RMK2.
