  • Hello,

Had the chance to try out an original game disk Into the Eagles Nest this last weekend. With the TC64v2 plugged into my NTSC C64c, the game will crash within seconds of trying to load up. Without the TC64 attached, the game disk plays just fine. I do have the 1541 drive emulator options off and turned off JiffyDOS hardware inside my C64c and the 1541-II disk drive off. This was the only game disk that would crash. Other harder copy protections like Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Predator, and another I forgot the title of actually worked whereas many years ago on the TC64v1 it wouldn't load any of those original game disks.

Again, just out of curiosity what may be causing the game disk to crash. VGA output is great, and I know I can just grab a G64 and be done with it, but would be nice to be able to use an original disk too. :) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Make sure to switch off *all* options including cartridges and turbo. Also, if you're using a real drive, it should be connected to the C64's IEC, and the correcponding option in the settings should also be chosen.

  • It's very hard to tell what exactly doesnt work right in these cases (which is why original games are terrible test cases). It could be one of the few details that arent working 100% right yet - but what it is? who knows :) I'll look at it a bit, but i cant justify spending a lot of time on this (reverse engineering a copy protection is a very time consuming process)

edit: apparently it uses vmax v2 - this is extremely timing critical, so chances are one of the remaining CIA bugs trigger this problem.

  • Thanks for the response. The CIA bugs might be what causes it to trigger. I did for sure turn off cartridges, turned off turbo, and had it hooked up to the actual C64 IEC. All is well, maybe once the remaining CIA bugs are fixed then the original game disk will be ok. :)
