CDTV button mapping: two-button mode feature?

  • There are games that work with "two-button" joysticks as with the one on the C64GS, where the second button is activated by connecting Vcc/+5V to POTX. I don't know how difficult this would be to add as an emulation option, but it would be nice to have for the handful of games which support it. (Instead of rapid-fire button mode for "B".)

Some discussion of this in the VICE feature request tracker, with more info: https://sourceforge.net/p/vice…eature-requests/189/#ad94

Would this be interesting to users, and possible to implement?

  • Since we are always very reluctant with removing features - i don't see this happening. Especially since the amount of games that support this second button is very low (less than ten), and thus autofire is much more useful.

Both the docking-station and the regular joystick port support this though, so making yourself a proper controller shouldnt be too hard (and it will likely be more responsive than the remote, especially for fast paced games). See the wiki

  • I do have a wired controller with two buttons using POTX to Vcc; my question was about perhaps making the CDTV remote also emulate this since that's all IR decoder based.

The above mapping from button to Up is a similarly good suggestion, as that would apply to a lot more games that are ports from other multi-button systems. Up is usually mapped to a jump or similar action in platformers, where that is frequently a different button on other systems.

  • As said, we are very reluctant to removing features - which would be needed to do this. I'd favour second button = potx myself, i don't see it happening however :)

  • A second Button on potx or potx may not help in many instances, but direction „up“ mapped to the second button would apply to quite a lot of platform games.

I agree. I want UP on the B button too. The jumping is impossible with the d-pad. I hardly play any games anymore with the cdtv controller because of this. 😢

Why not add a menu option somewhere to switch modes - or maybe map a little-used key on the remote to mode switching?
