  • Hello!

I installed my Indivision ECS v4 into my Amiga 500 rev 5 NTSC machine and got video output on my VGA monitor - played a game, and everything was great. I accidentally booted the emergency rescue disk from my gotek device, and before I realized what was happening, it flashed the firmware to what I assume is the latest version, but now I get no video output on any devices - just blank screen. I've confirmed the amiga is working as I can do "blind commands" but when the ECS v4 is installed there is no video to anything including RGB port. If I remove the Indivision device, everything is fine, so Amiga 500 is working properly w/o it. I'm able to pipe the output from "flashtool info" and view it on an emulator, shown here:

    Flashtool for IndivisionECSv4 2.3 flash sig: 53464458 - ver: 1.0

This Amiga is v1.3 ROM so only command line is available to me. The rescue disk in question was linked from the download section in the wiki for ECS v4

    I have tried the commands:

    flashtool flash firmware

    flashtool saveconfig default.conf

    Please help. Thank you

  • If you don't get any video, I can only assume that the rescue disk did not finish it's thing. It should have written the same core and config to the unit, as we haven't published an update yet (working on it!).

So the easiest thing for you is to run the rescue disk again with Indivision ECS V4 installed, and let it run from start to finish.

  • Hello, thanks for the quick response.

I re-downloaded the rescue disk and booted it and let it run with the Indivision installed. It eventually goes to a single flash repeated infinitely but no video has returned to RGB port or VGA.

  • Single blink means "everything went OK".

Please dobule-check all connections. The flash tool on the rescue disk is exactly the tool that we're using during initial bring-up and QC, so that's known-good. Also, make sure that your power supply is OK (not that known-bad sub-standard Ama*on/A-Power/Elektroware/Meanwell-based crap), and if all else fails, remove your audio- and monitor connection to make sure there's no ground loop.

If your monitor has multiple inputs, you may have to press the "source" button for it to switch back to VGA.

  • Is my ECS V4 Bricked?

I have downloaded the current ECSV4Rescue.adf for my Amiga 500 with the ECSV4 installed (CIA adapter not installed). The ADF booted and started flashing, went to black screen and never returned? My caps-lock light now blinks once every 2 seconds forever, whether I boot from a the ADF or another disk. I do not have any other peripherals in this machine,

I have unplugged everything except the VGA from the Indivision and the power and rebooted with the rescue disk again. Caps-Lock light has stopped flashing, but still a black screen. My monitor only has one VGA input, hence not a source input issue?

Any thoughts on how to recover welcome, thanks. The Indivision v4 was working before I ran the rescue disk. I am have an unmodified (except the Indivision v4 and a GoDrive) Amiga 500 rev 6a, 512kb chip, 512kb fast.

    Thanks!

  • A blinking caps light indicates an error in the keyboard, nothing to do with Indivision or the software. There is no Amiga-side control over the caps LED. The blink codes we're sending are on the Power LED.

Please do make sure that you're using the V4 rescue disk, not the V2/V3 disk. The FPGA cores of these two products aren't compatible; the V4 FPGA is completely different with much higher capacity.

If running the correct rescue disk doesn't bring back the picture, please double-check that the unit is seated properly.

    Jens

  • Well, I have opened the case again, checked everything was installed correctly, validated I am using the V4 disk - the one available on the icomp website anyway, rebooted - still have a black screen - no flashing caps lock now.

Removed the ECSv4, put a Denise 8373 in, Amiga starts up fine from the RGB native output. Put the ECS V4 back in, no VGA, no RGB.

Also, before running the V4 Rescue disk, the ECS v4 was working fine.

  • Also, before running the V4 Rescue disk, the ECS v4 was working fine.

So why did you run the rescue disk then?

It should not destroy anything (and indeed doesn't when I use it here), but if you didn't have a bricked unit, why run the de-brick process?

    Jens

  • Because you released a new firmware and I want to keep all my equipment up to date to prevent issues..

All have done is load the ECSv4Rescue disk expecting it would update my firmware to the current version. Is there a de-brick process? How do I get it back please?

You do not update the unit with the rescue disk. You do that with the config tool and the menu item from the drop-down menus.

    Is there a de-brick process?

It's the rescue disk. The ADF in the Wiki is just a service for those who didn't follow the manual and didn't make one on their machine using the config tool :-)

If the rescue disk doesn't work, and also doesn't work in a different computer, we'll have to look at the unit here. However, since the de-brick precess has been known-good since 2018 (when V2 was released - this part of the design has not changed since then!), I'd like to find out what goes wrong on your setup. You wrote that you've removed all expansions. What else is connected, used to be connected and what type of power supply are you using?

Since we've had reports of Gotek drives causing all kinds of trouble in an Amiga, do you also have a physical floppy drive and an empty disk that you can write the rescue disk to? What Kickstart is in your computer?

    Jens

  • Amiga 500 rev 6a, Kickstart 1.3, ECS Denise, ECS Agnus. 512kb Chip, 512kb Fast, and a GoDrive. No other expansions, no hard drive. I used the original A500 power supply which has been working flawlessly. I have two of them, changing them does not fix the issue, I also have your CA-PSU powering my A1200 which I could use on the weekend, but I think that is a long shot.

When I say Removed everything else, i mean I removed the audio, joystick, and mouse so only the power and VGA or RGB Natrive were plugged in.

I have removed the ECS v4 for now. A500 is working.

  • The one thing that I see in common with the thread starter (who did not answer any more, so I assume his problem is solved) is that you have Kickstart 1.3. Do you have access to a computer with a newer Kickstart where you can re-try this? This could be a physical chip, or a Kickstart that's coming from an ACA500plus.

    Jens

  • Went through my spares, and I have Kickstart 3.2.3 rom, but unfortunately that needs 2Mb RAM min, ahhh! I'll have to wait till the weekend to make a Kick-start 2 ROM.

The power light was flashing 5 times, then 2 long flashes, and then repeating - in case that helps troubleshooting.

    Thanks.

  • Sorry for the long delay , but I finally had time to put a PiStorm in my A500 with Kick 3.2.3, smf successfully flashed my Indivision which now working beautifully again, thank you!!

Lesson Learned for me - Do not use the rescue disk with Kickstart 1.3!
